FAQ

Is it suitable for children?

It is built for them. The exhibits are interactive rather than behind glass, and the material is pitched to be played with. It works well for primary and lower secondary ages.

Why is there an astronomy museum on Tenerife?

Because the island is a centre of professional astronomy. The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias operates the observatory at Izaña on the Teide slopes, and the sky above the island is protected by law to keep it usable.

Where is it?

In La Laguna, the old university town in the hills above Santa Cruz. The tram from the capital takes about twenty minutes and stops within walking distance.

How long does a visit take?

A couple of hours for most families, longer if the children engage with the exhibits properly. It combines well with a walk round La Laguna's old centre afterwards.

Is it in Spanish only?

The museum is part of the island museum organisation, which produces material in more than one language. Interactive exhibits also depend less on reading than a conventional display does.

What else is nearby?

La Laguna's old town, which is on the UNESCO list, and the Museum of the History of Tenerife in the same streets. Two museums and a walk make a comfortable day.
