FAQ

What is Casa Lercaro?

A sixteenth-century merchant's house in La Laguna, built for a family trading across the Atlantic. The courtyards and timber work are typical of the period and the building is listed in its own right.

What does the collection cover?

The economic and cultural history of the Canary Islands: the conquest, the sugar and wine trades, the Atlantic crossing and the islands' role as a staging post between Europe and the Americas.

Where is it?

In the old centre of La Laguna, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and the main streets. The tram from Santa Cruz stops nearby.

How does it relate to the other island museums?

It is part of the same organisation that runs the science museum, the nature and archaeology museum in Santa Cruz and several others. Combined tickets across them are usually available.

Is it interesting for children?

Less immediately than the science museum. Older children who like buildings and stories will get something from it; younger ones are better served up the road.

What happened to the Guanches?

The island's pre-conquest population was subjugated by Castile in a campaign ending in 1496, and absorbed or killed within a generation. The nature and archaeology museum in Santa Cruz holds the mummies and the artefacts.
