That progression is unusual here, where most venues do one of the three.

FAQ
Is Papagayo a club or a restaurant?
Both, at different hours. It serves food through the day, runs as a terrace bar in the evening and becomes a dance venue later. That means it suits a group that cannot agree on what kind of night it wants.
What is the DJ Mag ranking?
An annual poll of the world's clubs run by the electronic music magazine of that name. A placing in it is the trade's own assessment rather than the venue's, which is why it is worth quoting.
Is it on the beach?
It has direct access to the sand at Playa de las Américas, which is unusual on this strip. Most of the nightlife here is a street or two back from the water.
When does it get busy?
Earlier than the rest of the strip, because the daytime and evening trade rolls into the night rather than starting fresh at one in the morning.
Is there a dress code?
Smarter than beachwear once the evening starts, which is the usual convention along this coast. Anyone arriving straight from a sunbed should expect to be turned round.
Do I need to book?
For a table, particularly at a weekend or in high season, yes. For general entry later in the evening it works like any club on the strip.
