FAQ
What is actually made in the Canary Islands?
Wine, cheese, mojo sauces, gofio, palm honey from La Gomera, salt, embroidery, pottery and knives. A shop that restricts itself to those is selling a much shorter list than a general gift shop.
Where is La Orotava?
In the northern valley above Puerto de la Cruz, and it is one of the best-preserved towns on the island: wooden balconies, cobbled streets and a steep grid climbing away from the coast.
Is it worth going out of the way for?
It is worth combining with a day in the north rather than driving up for the shop alone. La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and the valley between them make a full day.
What should I bring home from Tenerife?
Wine is the best answer, because Canarian production is tiny and almost none of it leaves the islands. After that, mojo, gofio, palm honey and a bottle of the local rum.
Is Canarian craft work still made here?
Yes, though on a small scale: pottery, embroidery and knife-making all survive as living trades. A shop restricting itself to island production is the practical way to find them.
Is it more expensive than a resort gift shop?
Per item, usually, because the things in it were made rather than imported in bulk. What you get for that is something that came from the place you were standing in.
