That position tells you something: shops in the back streets of a working town survive on a mix of residents and visitors rather than on passing footfall alone.

FAQ
Where in Puerto de la Cruz is it?
In the old part of town rather than on the seafront, among the streets behind the harbour. The centre is compact and walkable, so nothing there is far from anything else.
Why shop away from the promenade?
Prices in the back streets tend to be set for a mixed trade rather than for passing holiday footfall, and the walk to get there is through an old town rather than along a line of frontages.
What is Puerto de la Cruz worth seeing for?
It was the island's first resort, a century before the south. The Lago Martiánez sea pools, the botanical garden planted in 1788, a black-sand beach and an old harbour quarter.
How far is it from the southern resorts?
About an hour and a quarter by motorway around the eastern side of the island. It is a day trip from the south rather than an afternoon.
What is worth buying here?
The island-made things: wine, mojo, gofio, and craft work. Almost everything else on a gift shop shelf anywhere in the world came from the same factory.
Is the north cheaper than the south?
Generally yes, and noticeably so on food and drink. The northern towns have a resident economy behind them rather than only a visitor one.
