FAQ

Does the cable car go to the summit?

No. It reaches La Rambleta at 3,555 metres, leaving the final 163 metres to the peak on foot. That last section needs a separate free permit, capped at 200 people a day.

How do I get the summit permit?

Free from the national park authority, booked well in advance because the daily cap fills months ahead in high season. A warden checks it at the foot of the path.

When does it close?

In high wind, and the decision is taken on the morning rather than in advance. Checking before driving up saves a two-hour round trip for nothing.

How cold is it at the top?

Far colder than the coast, below freezing in winter, and windy in almost any season. People arrive from a beach in shorts and last about ten minutes outside.

Is the altitude a problem?

For most people it is mild breathlessness and perhaps a headache. The park advises against it for anyone with a heart or lung condition, and that advice is worth taking literally.

Should I book a time slot?

Yes. Booking online avoids a queue that can pass an hour in winter, which is high season here because European walkers come when their own routes are shut.
